Most people come to Australia's capital city to see the political heart of the country, to visit Parliament House and the national monuments and landmarks. It's true the Canberra isn't our most vibrant and exciting city, however one very big plus for the national capital is its convenient proximity to other attractions.

Visiting Canberra in the winter months will allow you easy access to Australia's best skiing and snowboarding opportunities. Canberra doesn't have any snowy peaks of its own, although it certainly gets cold in the winter. But the capital is within easy reach of several ski resorts. Perisher and Thredbo, the two major resorts in the Australian Alps, can be reached by car or bus from Canberra in around three hours. Many Canberran residents take single day trips to the snow.

If cross-country skiing is more to your taste, then Canberra is an even better place to begin. Not far outside the Australian Capital Territory you will find beautiful back country with great cross-country terrain.

If you're considering a skiing holiday in Australia's southeast, Canberra is the ideal place to base yourself. There are ample accommodation options around town, good restaurants and friendly people. In between ski runs, you'll have time to immerse yourself in a bit of Australia's cultural and political history. Don't forget your scarf and gloves!
