Royal Australian Mint

The Mint is responsible for the production of all Australian coin in circulation and was built in 1965 to prepare for the introduction of decimal currency to Australia. The Mint now offers visitors its recently refurbished and modern facilities Visitors to the mint can enjoy an informative and entertaining experience while gaining an insight into the process of how coins are produced.

Here you can have an exclusive view of the mint in operation from the observation windows and watch the staff while they work and see the amazing robots doing some of the heavy lifting work. You will also see some automated vehicles being guided to do their job by the staff. Some TV screens in the foyer area also show the activity on the production floor.

A theatrette provides presentations which further explain the coin making process. The mint has displays of some rare and valuable coins of historical significance from the National Coin Collection.

A highlight for many visitors is in the Coin Shop, where you are able to make a coin of your own using the visitor press and view coin collector issues and find some unique ideas for gifts. The Mint is open from Monday to Friday from 9:00 am until 4:00pm and 10:00 am until 4:00 pm on weekends and public holidays. The factory floor may not be open for weekend operations depending on business requirements. There are self-guided tours and no cost for admission.
