New Parliament House - Parliament of Australia

Canberra hotels

A tour of Australia’s Parliament House is often a priority of for visitors to the nation’s capital. Often referred to as “New Parliament House,” it was opened in 1988 and constructed entirely of Australian materials. The architecture is impressive and the complex sits in a beautiful landscape spanning over 32 acres in all. It is an impressive and popular attraction, located on Capital Hill.

Visitors can progress throughout the building and gain a symbolic experience of Australian History. The forecourt features a mosaic dot painting in recognition of the Indigenous history and culture in Australia.

Visitors are able to sit in the public galleries and view the proceedings of both Houses of Parliament when they are in session. There are almost 400 visitor seats available. Tickets can be booked for Question time in the House of Representatives which is usually at 2.00 pm on sitting days. Often you are able to view Question time without a booking if you arrive before 2 pm.

Free public tours operate every day of the week 3 times a day. For a more personalized experience there are paid tours available providing an individual exploration of the House. The tours are shorter when parliament is sitting because of the restricted availability of some of the chambers.

Parliament House is open from 8:30 am until 5:00 pm on Tuesdays, Wednesday and Thursdays, when parliament is sitting. On all other days it is open from 9.00am to 5.00pm.

There is a shop to purchase souvenirs and gifts, a café for light refreshments, extensive parking and disabled access.
