National Gallery of Australia

Canberra hotels

The gallery is home to Australia’s national art collection comprising over 100,000 works in the permanent collection. Travelling Exhibitions and displays from overseas are featured on a regular basis, through the gallery’s ongoing schedule.

Extensive renovations have recently been completed and the stunning Stage One Complex features eleven galleries housing the works of the Australian Indigenous Art collection. The striking visitor entrance, shop, foyer and function area have been built with Australian materials specially selected from all over the country and feature impressive marble, slate and granite.

Admission is free to the permanent collection. Fees may apply to special exhibitions.

Visitors are not permitted to take photographs of art inside the gallery for the sake of copyright and preservation of the works.

Free guided tours operate daily (except Christmas day) and feature the Australian Art tour twice daily, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tour on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday and the Collection Highlights tour, twice daily. The tours range from 30 minutes to an hour.

The gallery is within close walking distance from the Old Parliament House and National Library. There is limited car parking provided in two car parks and to avoid difficulties in finding a car park public transport is a wise alternative. Open daily 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.
