Australian National Botanic Gardens

Canberra hotels

The National Botanic Gardens provide visitors with the opportunity to view the scientific collection of native plants from all over Australia. A visit can be for a pleasant family outing, a peaceful solitary walk or for more formal botanical research and studies. Whatever the reason, the gardens can provide something for all.

Visitors can take advantage of free guided tours which take place every day and last for about an hour. There are always new and inventive exhibitions and workshops taking place which provide visitors with more understanding of Australia’s beautiful native flora.

Volunteer guides provide scheduled walks throughout the gardens every day and there is something to suit everyone. The walks range from a short stroll from the Visitor Centre if time is limited, to a 1.5 km walk of about one hour duration, to a steep 90 minute climb in the Black Mountain Nature Park. Children are well catered for with half hour educational children’s walks and activities.

If your prefer you can simply relax and enjoy a picnic in the peaceful surroundings at one of the many picnic tables or visit the café and bookshop while the children play on the lawns.

There is free entry for visitors and the gardens opening times are daily from 8:30 am until 5:00 pm. During January closing is not until 6:00 pm on weekdays and 8:00 pm on the weekends to take advantage of the summer weather and school holidays.
